Minimal Enteral Nutrition

چکیده
Minimal Enteral Nutrition Abstract Although parenteral nutrition has been used widely in the management of sick very low birth weight infants, a smooth transition to the enteral route is most desirable. Trophic feeding is the practice of feeding minute volumes of enteral feeds in order to stimulate the development of the immature gastrointestinal tract of the preterm infant. This concept has been termed as Minimal Enteral Nutrition (MEN). Trophic feeding improves gastrointestinal disaccharidase activity, hormone release, blood flow, motility and microbial flora. Clinical benefits include improved milk tolerance, greater postnatal growth, reduced systemic sepsis and shorter hospital stay. There is currently no evidence of any adverse effects following trophic feeding. MEN may be commenced in neonates on ventilation and total parenteral nutrition. A protocol for giving MEN has been described

متن کاملMinimal enteral nutrient requirements for intestinal growth in neonatal piglets: how much is enough?
BACKGROUND Parenterally nourished preterm infants commonly receive minimal enteral feedings, the aim being to enhance intestinal function. Whether this regimen increases intestinal growth has not been established. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to determine the minimal enteral nutrient intakes necessary to stimulate and to normalize neonatal intestinal growth. METHODS Intestinal growth and cel...
متن کاملMinimal Enteral Feeding
Abstract In preterm infants, enteral feeding is often delayed by hours to days after birth for fear of feeding intolerance due to immaturity, to avoid the accentuation of hypoxic/ischemic intestinal injury that might have been sustained in utero due to maternal risk factors such as pre-eclampsia, placental inusufficiency, or chorioamnionitis, or after birth due to the presence of cardio respira...

Minimal enteral nutrition.
Although parenteral nutrition has been used widely in the management of sick very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, a smooth transition to the enteral route is most desirable. Animal studies have shown that long periods of starvation are associated with mucosal atrophy and reduction of enzymatic activity. Studies have shown that giving small volumes of feeds frequently exerts a trophic effect on...
